How to Access Mental Health Care in NSW

A practical guide to finding and accessing mental health support in New South Wales — from GP referrals and Medicare pathways to community services, telehealth, and crisis support.
Starting the conversation with your GP
For most people in NSW, the first step to accessing mental health care is a conversation with their GP. Your GP can assess your mental health, prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP), and refer you to the right professional — whether that is a psychologist, psychiatrist, or allied health provider. If you do not have a regular GP, any GP can help; you do not need an ongoing relationship to get a referral.
When you book your GP appointment, let the receptionist know you want to discuss your mental health and that you may need a care plan. This ensures you are given enough time — a standard 10-minute appointment is not sufficient for an MHTP consultation. Ask for a 20–30 minute appointment.
The Better Access pathway — psychology with Medicare rebates
The Better Access initiative is the main Medicare pathway for accessing psychology in Australia. With a valid MHTP from your GP, you are entitled to up to 10 individual psychology sessions per calendar year with a Medicare rebate applied to each. This significantly reduces the cost of private psychology.
Better Access is available to any Australian with a Medicare card who has a diagnosable mental health condition — including anxiety, depression, PTSD, eating disorders, and many others. You do not need to be severely unwell to access it; the pathway is designed for mild to moderate presentations as well as more complex needs.
Telehealth — accessing care from anywhere in NSW
Telehealth has transformed access to mental health care in NSW, particularly for people in regional and rural areas, those with mobility limitations, and anyone who finds it difficult to attend in person. Medicare rebates apply equally to telehealth psychology sessions, so the financial pathway is the same whether you attend in person or by video.
At Primed Health, we offer telehealth psychology and allied health appointments to patients across NSW. You need a device with a camera and internet connection, a private space, and a valid GP referral. Our admin team can help you confirm your eligibility and set up your first telehealth session.
Community mental health services in NSW
NSW Health operates a network of community mental health services through Local Health Districts. These services are publicly funded and free to access, though they are typically targeted at people with moderate to severe mental illness. Referrals can come from GPs, emergency departments, or self-referral in some areas.
Community mental health teams provide case management, medication review, and support for people with ongoing mental health conditions. They are not a substitute for private psychology — they focus on stabilisation and community support rather than structured psychological therapy. Your GP can advise whether a community mental health referral is appropriate for your situation.
headspace — for young people aged 12–25
headspace is Australia's national youth mental health foundation, with centres across NSW including in Sydney's Northern Beaches region. headspace provides free or low-cost mental health, physical health, alcohol and other drug, and work and study support for young people aged 12–25.
You do not need a GP referral to access headspace — young people can walk in or call to make an appointment. headspace centres offer individual counselling, group programs, and online support. For young people who are not ready to see a GP, headspace is often a more accessible first step.
Head to Health — finding services near you
Head to Health is an Australian Government initiative that helps people find mental health services in their area. The Head to Health website (headtohealth.gov.au) includes a service finder covering GPs, psychologists, psychiatrists, community mental health services, and online programs. It also provides free phone support through the Head to Health phone line (1800 595 212).
Head to Health Adult Mental Health Centres provide free, walk-in mental health support in some areas of NSW. These centres are staffed by mental health clinicians and do not require a GP referral or Medicare card. They are designed to bridge the gap between GP care and hospital-level services.
Crisis and emergency mental health support
If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 000. For mental health crisis support that does not require emergency services, the following services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week: Lifeline (13 11 14), Beyond Blue (1300 22 4636), and the NSW Mental Health Line (1800 011 511).
The NSW Mental Health Line connects callers with a mental health clinician who can provide immediate support, advice, and referrals to local services. It is staffed by qualified mental health professionals and is available to anyone in NSW, including carers and family members concerned about someone else.
Accessing mental health care at Primed Health
Primed Health offers psychology, allied health, and medical specialist services at our Frenchs Forest clinic and via telehealth across NSW. We accept referrals from GPs and specialists, and we welcome self-referred patients (though Medicare rebates require a GP referral and MHTP).
